Meeting and discussion with Spanish writer Juan Gómez Bárcena

On February 27, at 10:00 AM, Vytautas Magnus University (V. Putvinskio g. 23, room 313) will host a meeting and discussion with writer Juan Gómez Bárcena, a representative of contemporary Spanish literature. The event is organised for the VMU community by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Lithuania in cooperation with the Institute of Foreign Languages and the Miguel de Cervantes Spanish Language and Culture Club. The event will be held in Spanish.Juan Gómez Bárcena (born in 1984 in Santander, Spain) is a literary theorist, historian, and philosopher, one of the most prominent Spanish prose writers of his generation. His debut book of short stories, Los que duermen (2012), was awarded the Premio Tormenta prize for best literary debut of the year. His novel El cielo de Lima (2014) won the prestigious Premio Ojo Crítico de Narrativa and Premio Ciudad de Alcalá de Narrativa awards and has been translated into many languages. His later works include Kanada (2017) and Ni siquiera los muertos (2020). His most important novel, Lo demás es aire (translated into Lithuanian as Lieka tik oras, Alma Littera, 2024), won the Premio Ciutat de Barcelona de Literatura and Vanity Fair awards, establishing Juan Gómez Bárcena as one of the most important voices in contemporary Spanish literature.

During the meeting with the VMU community, he will talk about trends in contemporary Spanish literature, themes of history and memory in his work, the relationship between literature and philosophy, and his creative process. The event will provide an opportunity to get to know Juan Gómez Bárcena better and ask him questions.
