Spanish Film Cycle at VMU this October

On 2 October at 17:00, Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) and the Embassy of Spain in Lithuania invite you to the opening of the fourth Spanish Film Cycle, which will run throughout the month of October. The first screening will feature Celda 211 (dir. Daniel Monzón, 2009).

In 2021, the Spanish Council of Ministers declared 6 October as the Day of Spanish Cinema. This date honours the role and influence of filmmakers in Spain’s cultural and social life, as well as the contribution of cinematic heritage to shaping Spain’s contemporary identity. Each year, the Ministry of Culture and Sport of Spain recommends screening a significant Spanish film in cities across the world where Spanish is taught. This year’s selected film is Tasio (dir. Montxo Armendáriz, 1984).

VMU and the Embassy of Spain in Lithuania are once again joining this initiative for the fourth consecutive year, inviting the university community and the public to discover Spanish cinema. This year’s programme offers a remarkable variety of films: from the gripping prison drama Celda 211 (dir. Daniel Monzón, 2009) to the heartfelt portrayal of rural life in the Basque Country in Tasio (dir. Montxo Armendáriz, 1984). Comedy lovers will enjoy Javier Fesser’s modern film Historias lamentables (2020), while history enthusiasts will have the chance to revisit Spain’s colonial past in 1898: Los últimos de Filipinas (dir. Fernando González Molina, 2016). The cycle will conclude with the psychological family drama Todos lo saben (dir. Asghar Farhadi, 2018), starring two of Spain’s most celebrated actors, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

“This year’s film selection reflects not only a diversity of cinematic genres but also offers audiences the chance to explore different facets of Spanish history and society. We hope this variety will appeal both to VMU students and to all those in Kaunas eager to discover the world of Spanish cinema,” says the cycle’s coordinator, Vigilija Žiūraitė, lecturer of Spanish at the VMU Institute of Foreign Languages.

All screenings are open to the public. Films will be shown in the original language with English subtitles. Everyone is warmly welcome!
